Help!! snails are taking over my fish tank!?
I bought some live plants for my tropical fish tank recently – about 2 weeks ago. I was told to soak them in lemon juice to kill any snail eggs so I did. As a matter of fact they sat in the juice for days since I was too lazy to put them into the tank right away. Now I have snails everywhere. I knew they could multiply fast but there are sooo many as small as pin points! How can I get rid of them without flushing them down the toilet?

maybe one of those aquarium vacuums will do the job.
Get some fish that are big enought to eat the fish. Try to feed them to your fish by cracking the shell and dropping it in the tank.
The safest way is to put a piece of lettuce or blanched zucchini on a net overnight and take it out in the morning. You might need to repeat this a few nights in a row.
I have the same problem they, bred like anything..best thing to do its go to the pet shop and get a small snail trap its small and goes in yr tank the snails are draw to it and get stuck inside…then just throw them out.
Loaches love snails for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve even borrowed a school from a friend in the past to kill off my snails population – it only took about a week.
Also, limit conditions that snails like. The less food and algae there is, the better. Feed your fish less (they’ll survive) so there is less ‘extra’ for the snails, and change your water more often.
I’ve tried the lettuce trick, but it didn’t work for me. Good Luck!
Get a loach. There are also chemicals you can buy to get rid of snails, but they will be harmful to other invertebrates in your tank.
donate them to petsmart you wont kill them and u get money 2
wwell i would suggest the traps ive read on the net u can use film canisters. all you do is poke a hole in the lid put some lettuce or zuccinni or something in it and place them in your tank and take them out every morning and empty them and repeat.I also had the problem but decided snails are more good then bad they eat unwanted food and the dead leaves or dying leaves from your plants. The only way the get out of control is if your feed ing you fish to much they love left over food. Just do what i do and trap them every so often so they dont get too out of control. PS make sure you find out what kind of snails there are from what ive read there are a few that eat the live leaves of your plants also if there trumpet snails they are pretty much the earthworms of the aquarium so keep them
Wow, my lifes story! Ive gotten live plants from petsmart over my ten years of being an aquarist, and nearly every time I did, my tank became over run with snails. At first, I just netted em and threw ‘em out my window ( my room is in the basement, so the window is ground high), then, when that became monotomus, I started to crush ‘em with my thumb. Not only did that become monotomus, but it left hundreds of snail carcasses on my substrate, not a pretty sight. Finally I found out from a friend that clown loaches are mean lean, snail eating machines. As apprehesive as I was so spend 12 dollars on two fish that I knew nothing about, I am now so greatfull that I did. After about 2 weeks, there wasn’t a snail to be seen. What is amazing is they even ate the shells, as well as all of the eggs. Sadly, after the feast of snail was over, they died because they didn’t have enough to eat. I made a mistake of not feeding sinking pellets! If you do that, your snail problem will be over! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use snail poisons. If it was ment to kill somehting, I am sure it isn’t good for your fish!
Good luck!
This site is very nice, I was a bit confused but I know it is a lot more clear tonight.
