I just bought a goldfish and am wondering if my old fish food will be okay to feed it?

I just bought a goldfish, but previously had a tropical fish. I still have the tropical fish’s food, but don’t know if it will be okay to feed it.

So first of all, I’m wondering if fish food has an expiration date? Lol.

Second of all, I’m wondering if tropical fish food will be alright to feed my goldfish. I have a container of “Nutrafin Max Complete Tropical Flakes”, and compared the nutrition facts to “Nutrafin Coldwater Flakes”.
The only real difference I could see was in the “Crude Protein”. The minimum % of crude protein in the tropical flakes was 44%, and the coldwater flakes contained a minimum of 33%. Will this harm my goldfish or make it unhealthy?
What kinds of fruits and veggies would you suggest? ^_^
Haha. (: Thanks for all the responses you guys! I’m heading out soon anyway so I’ll probably just head back to the pet store to get some.

that’s exactly it, goldfish are herbivores. so the tropical flakes have more protein than goldfish need. it won’t kill him, but he’ll be much better if you get him goldfish specific food, I’d suggest sinking pellets instead of flakes. don’t forget fresh fruits and veggies a few times a week too, very important for a healthy goldfish.

here is a list I got from kokos goldfish a while ago but it’s not on the site anymore:

    Banana – lumps
    Blackberries
    Carrot – shredded
    Cheddar Cheese – finely shredded
    Clam – cooked, chopped
    Grapefruit – sections
    Grapes – peeled
Green Peas – Boiled and Skinned
    Lime – sections
    Oat Flakes
    Orange – sections
    Raspberries
    Spinach – boiled, small leaves

Goldfish are omnivores and eat more plant material than tropical fish. There are tropical fish that eat veggie matter also, like plecos and other algae eaters, but most of the popular tropical fish are carnivores and eat insects, crustaceans and other fish. So tropical fish food has a higher percentage of animal matter and higher protein. Goldfish food has more veggie matter and thus lower protein. Excess protein is unnecessary for goldfish and will dirty the tank faster. I would feed the goldfish first with goldfish food,

Fish food loses a lot of its nutritional value about six months after opening it. You should replace your can of food about every six months, if it hasn’t been finished by then ;)

You should always feed a specialized diet if available. It’s like feeding cat food to your dog because “they’re both furry land carnivores”. It’s not going to be ideal nutrition, it may harm the fish by making it sick or more succeptable to bacteria/parasites, and there are plenty of quality goldfish flakes out there.

Stop trying to be frugal and just buy some darn goldfish flakes :P

I won’t kill them and it’ll fill them up. But it’s not as nutrional to them plus flakes loses there value and so the kinda have an experation date. You choice. Its not that expensive so I’d make the move.
