how many gallons is your tank?

  • fishwife:

depends on how small – but small aquarium + colourful fish = beta fish, and even they need their space.

  • Jico:

    try gold fish…

  • NANCY J:

guppies, they are small and colorful but don’t live very long, get boy and girls and they will mate, and at lease leave you with new fish.
there are also several types of neons, they are cool, but don’t live very long.
Gold fish, keep their tank cleaner, and live a long time but they are so common.
There is also several varieties of mollies and platies. They live a little longer than guppies. and also mate which will give you more fish when they start to die off. And the different breeds will mate with each other so you will get many different colors.
there is also tetras and barbs, but be careful with the barbs, some of them are aggressive. In fact do your homework, because there are a lot of fish that are beautiful and aggressive. you don’t want agressive fish in a small tank, unless he is the only fish.
Don’t get an angel fish if you have never raised fishes before, they can be delicate.

    guppys
    tetras
    platys
    danio
    rosy reds

you might want to put how big you aquarium is going to be and never get goldfish, people put em in bowls but they can get over 1 foot long

there are many fish out there, some great options have already been listed!
guppies are colorfull and have much finnage. they breed easily. males are prettier than females usually
neon tetras are shiny with a little red, they are a schooling fish and do best in groups of 5 – 10+
swordtails are colourfull and males have interesting tail fins
platies are colorful and can have interesting colour patterns
mollies are very pretty. they are actually brackish but do well in a freshwater aquarium. as all fish listed previously, they are peacefull community members. i love dalmation mollies! take a look at sailfin mollies too
khulie loaches are the size of worms when young (no joke! they move like them too) and have interesting black and orange patterns, howver i am not sure how big they get
please don’t get gold fish for many reasons! although they are coldwater fish so i don’t think you have any intentions of getting one anyway =P
    best of luck! =]

how small is small? like tetras and guppies need a 10 gallon min. a betta alone needs a bare min of 2.5, although i think a 5g with a heater and some shrimp looks better. it depends, please cycle and test your water before adding the fish

  • orangeeboy2006:

    neon tetras or small tetras

  • BMTHESPIAN:

It really depends on what you mean by small. Some tanks are so small they aren’t really suitable for any fish. If you are looking at at least a 5-6 gallon tank then a betta with perhaps some freshwater shrimp or a small school of pygmy cories (not the regualr ones pygmy only get to 1/2 inch) or a group of 2-3 male guppies. If you are looking at say a 10 gal either of the 2 above ideas but you could also go with say a school of 6 neon or cardianl tetra and a small school of pygmy cories or 2 male platies or 2 male guppies or a betta (yes bettas can be kept with other fish just not other bettas or anything with long flowing fins like guppies), you could also keep any combination of up to 6 male guppies and platies. (the reason I don’t recommend females is they will quickly outbreak a small tank) The biger you go the more options you have.

Any that you fancy but always remember no more than 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.
Read up on fish, experiment a bit. Use your common sense.
Don`t take too much notice of the answers that you get on a site like this.
It looks like most of them read books and listen to fish dealers without trying anything new for themselves.
Most “Pet Shop” people are not aquarists.
My fish nearly always grow to maximum size and live their full lifespan. The long lived species? After a few years I get bored with them before any die. I then exchange them for different fish at a proffessional fish dealers/aquarists.

some great colorful fish are sunburst glofish, in the danio family i think, and they come in very bright and almost fluorescent colors. You can also have neons, which are always a popular fish, and those two fish are compatible. There are a bunch of other tetras that are colorful, serpaes are a brilliant red. You have a lot of options, but i wouldnt go any smaller than a 6 gallon tank, and that may be pushing it, but good luck.

  • buddieblue:

Really depends on size of tank.

  • Marty G:

Neon tetras always look good in a tank. Get six and you will enjoy watching them.

  • Guppies. They require little room, are very hardy and all kinds of colors are available.
